Structural Depth

Construction Breadth

Existing lateral force resisting system of Three Quarry Ridge is flexible moment connection in which the entire floor participates in the resisting of the lateral forces. For the structural depth, a change of the lateral system will be proposed. The new purposed lateral system will be concrete shear walls. Concrete shear walls are going to be placed in different spots of the building most likely at the stair towers and elevator tower. The design of shear wall will be done in accordance with ACI 318-14 requirements. Also, reinforcement will be designed following the same code and procedures.

The purposed change of the lateral system will have a big impact on the schedule and the cost of the building. The new schedule will have to be designed because there is not going to be anymore welding/bolting on the field since the moment frames will be replaced will shear walls. This will change the cost since concrete will be used instead of steel beams and the labor will get more/less expensive (research will be conducted to decide which is cheaper). Another factor that will affect the schedule is the curing time of concrete that will probably slow down the process of building. All this analysis regarding cost and schedule will be used to decide if the new purposed lateral system is feasible.

Acoustical Breadth

Three Quarry Ridge is an office building with almost an open floor configuration so noise will be a great factor in the performance of the occupants. For this reason, acoustic analyze will be made so areas with great noise will be identified and a solution will be proposed. Also changing the material of the building from steel to concrete will have different responses to noise. Solution will vary depending on the acoustic requirements of the certain areas of the building. One solution could be adding carpet layer on top of the concrete floor to help with the sound transmittance from a floor to the other.
